Happy Lunar New Year 🐇| 2023

By Panos Ioannou, L.Ac.

Lunar New Year is one of the most important celebrations in East and Southeast Asian cultures. It is a time of celebration and families reunite to honor their deities and ancestors and partake in traditions that symbolize abundance and prosperity. This year, celebrations begin January 22 and extend until the new moon.

2023 is the year of the Yin Water Rabbit. The Rabbit is the fourth of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals. It represents prospering, growing, and expanding energy. The new year begins on January 22nd and the rabbit emerges on February 4th. The rabbit is the luckiest animal and is said to bring new opportunities.

The rabbit represents the month of March and the time 5am to 7am. This is the time when animals emerge from their caves and wag their tails to welcome spring. The rabbit is associated with the wood element, the color green, and the cardinal direction east. Personality traits include wisdom, ambition, skill, secrecy, and vitality.  Some consider those born in the Year of the Rabbit to be overly sensitive, and cautious in their decision making in hopes of avoiding conflict.

Rabbits run fast but take time to rest and display gentleness. Rabbits live in underground dens, allowing them to restore their vitality. They possess great strategic qualities and know when to act or retreat.  So, 2023 holds amazing potential for creating a plan and putting ideas into action.

The nimble nature of the rabbit empowers us to maneuver around any obstacles. There can be old patterns or belief systems that hold us back. But the rabbit’s agility enables us to let go of these! Rabbits are not risk-takers or fighters. Instead, they are cautious.  Their nature allows us to move forward with care.
